Driver leaves scene after breaking two utility poles -1/31/2018

Updated January 31, 2018, 7:00 p.m.

At about 5:45 a.m. on Wednesday, January 31, 2018, a vehicle heading northwest on the Route 1 south of Calais ran off the road about a quarter mile northwest of the former Heslin's Hotel. The vehicle struck EMEC equipment, breaking two poles. This resulted in costly repairs for several companies with cables attached to those two poles. It also resulted in an emergency power outage later that morning.

After causing the damage, the vehicle then tried to get back on the road through a snowbank, but was unsuccessful. The driver stopped, backed up, and drove onto Route 1 from the ditch, leaving the scene of the accident. Tire tracks and several significant pieces of broken dark blue and black cowling were left at the scene, as pictured.

Anyone who saw or heard anything related to this incident is encouraged to contact the police or to contact Eastern Maine Electric Co-op at (207) 454-1524.
